A Game of Gods
Worm that Walks. Wizard. Worshiper of Shar.
Born a Sun Elf to one of the oldest families on Evermeet. Amon excelled at scholarly pursuits where his areas of interest allowed him to learn a great deal in the fields of History, Religion and the Planes. On his 90th birthday he asked his parents for permission to take a ship to Baldur’s Gate where he intended to travel on to Candlekeep (the largest library in Faerun) to continue his learning. His parents were unwilling to let their son risk such a dangerous journey at such a young age. Amon did not relent every day for 10 years he found new excuses to argue his cause until his parents relented and gave him permission. The day after his 100th birthday he and his father Elrien as escort departed for Candlekeep. After 5 months of travel they arrived at Candlekeep and were welcomed by it scholars. Amon’s father remained 1 month to ensure that his son was settled before departing back for Evermeet insisting that his son continue to write to him and his mother on a regular basis.
Amon spent a further 15 years studying at Candlekeep working as a scholar translating texts and copy books learning all he could in his spare time. Over those 15 years his interests turned to the arcane as he researched the ancient and powerful magic’s of the ancient cultures of Faerun as well as the secret and forgotten lore of the elves, and the dwarves as well as the forbidden knowledge of the shadow weave. His fascination with the arcane pushed him to approach one of the wizards in residence at Candlekeep (Da’reeque Borehl) and asked to become his apprentice. The wizard admiring his enthusiasm for learning the art agreed to teach him. Amon displayed a natural aptitude for magic and was soon capable of earning the title wizard in 12 short years.
After completing his training with Da’reeque he decided to travel north to the Elven city of Silverymoon to see his elven cousins in Faerun before returning home to Evermeet. He took ship from Baldur’s Gate to Waterdeep where he saw many of the wonders the city of splendours had to offer. Waterdeep served so distracting that he spent 3 years working there as a member of the Watchful Order of Mages and Protectors before finally leaving to visit Silverymoon as he originally planned to do. When he arrived in Silverymoon he was welcomed by the many elves that live there as a brother and marvelled at the similarities in culture between the elves of Silverymoon and the elves of his own home on Evermeet. He lived in Silverymoon for 12 years studying the ancient histories of the elves of Faerun completely lost in studies he forgot of returning home.
When the lord of Everlund a human city near to Silverymoon asked if one of the learned elves of Silverymoon could come to Everlund to teach his son to help broaden his education Amon volunteered, seeking the opportunity to not only learn more of human histories but to help educate and shape the young mind of a future lord. The first thing he noticed while living with the humans was how even though they had such short life spans they lived so much in such a short time. It was like rather than hording and viciously protecting what little they had they revelled in the brief time they had living each moment with intense joy as if it were their last making each moment count. In his time living with these humans and teaching their young he learned to love life and all it had to offer. It was then he met Eydis, she was beautiful and enthralling he fell deeply in love with her. Eydis was a fellow scholar who taught the lords children maths and geography. They sat for may evening discussing what they had learned and debating interpretations of history and politics. In the summer they were married and living together in a small home in the city together. It was there that they had their son who they named Marinus after her father.
He was happy he watched the lord’s son grow into a fine man who would one day rule his city well. His own son was growing quickly too in almost the blink of an eye he was running around and learning things quickly, his human heritage granting him an accelerated growth to that of an elf. With the lords son a man grown now Amon and his wife’s service as his tutors were no longer require so they opened their own school in town for any children who wished to attend using his influence with the lord he acquired funding for his school.
Together they ran their school for a number of years until the town was attacked by an evil wizard who had turned to necromancy Gaius Fain. Amon aided in defence of the city plying his skills in the art to fight of the hordes of the undead Fain had sent against the city. Upon returning home he found his wife and 12 year old son missing. There was no sign of them at all and all evidence indicated that they had been taken by Fain’s horde along with others of the town that had been captured and marched off. Amon joined with what few who were willing to head off in pursuit of their loved ones.
The journey was long and arduous desperately trying to catch Fain to cut him off to save their loved one but he always seemed one step ahead of them. Leaving traps and ambushes every step of the way. After a month of travel they tracked Fain down to his tower. Of the 12 that had departed from Everlund only 4 remained. They stole into the tower to rescue the captives only to discover that they had all been used in Fain’s magical experiments. Amon’s son had been cut to pieces each section still alive for some unknown dark purpose and Eydis Fain had turned into a Vampire to serve as one of his bodyguards. After ending his families suffering he and what remained of the adventurers who left Everlund confronted Fain and they battled until only Amon and Fain remained. Both injured Fain retreated teleporting himself away from the tower leaving Amon alone to his grief. In his furious rage Amon remembered what he had learned in Candlekeep of the forbidden and dangerous Shadow Weave. The Shadow Weave as it bypassed the Weave itself was capable of tearing through conventional magical defences and in his madness he saw a possible weapon to use against Fain. The Shadow Weave was the domain of the dark goddess Shar the god of secrets, darkness and revenge. In the tower where he lost his family he opened his own veins and drew Shar’s unholy symbols covering the entire room and over his entire body and swore his life in service to her if she could help him wreak his vengeance on Fain. Shar answered she the knowledge and secret arts of the shadow weave.
His new course set he departed following Fain’s trail. It lead him to Waterdeep where he found a group of individuals with a similar goal of tracking Fain down. In Waterdeep they discovered Fain’s goals his dark research into immortality by becoming a worm that walks (a dark creature made of vermin). After months of tracking him down they located the place where he was performing the ritual to become the creature of unspeakable evil only to arrive late after he had accomplished his goal. As the monstrous beast Fain was able to dispatch the entire assembled group who had set out to kill him accept Amon and Laylar Rai who were able to escape allowing Fain to escape Amon’s vengeance yet again.
Over the next few months Amon sank into a state of depression believing himself unable to kill Fain. He researched everything he could find on the subject of Worms that Walk in order to find a method of slaying him mortal enemy Fain. Over many months he came to the conclusion that his only option was to follow Fain on his path and also become a creature of evil. With Laylar as his assistant and the secret knowledge of the ritual given to him by Shar as part of a deal he made with the dark goddess they performed the same ritual Fain had and Amon became a Worm.
Armed with his new abilities he tracked Fain down one last time with a plan. And using dark magic’s severed Fain from his ability to wield magic and destroyed all but a few pieces of Fain it was then that Amon decided that death was too good a punishment for all Fain had done to him. He took what remained of Fain and stripped it of all memory and intellect and sealed what was left of him in his tower so he could regenerate and be tortured again and again to pay for what he had done.
Now his vengeance was completed he felt empty. There was nothing left to him. He had sold all he was and all he had for is vengeance he could no longer return to his people or anything he had once been. Now all that was left to him was to follow his agreement with Shar and dedicated his every last action to her and her dark goals.
